This week I have been sick, so I’m keeping away from my roommates by staying locked in our apartment’s lounge and sleeping on the couch by the window. This implies I get to listen to each vehicle driving down my street, and it’s taught me a lesson: Lots of you’re buying just essentially the most garbage exhausts available. They’re terrible, they sound like trash, and I want you all to stop. Please, buy good exhausts as a substitute.

The thing with aftermarket exhausts is that “loud” is comparatively low-cost and straightforward. Add pipe diameter, remove cats, shrink mufflers, and also you’re golden — you may have an exhaust that is freer-flowing and louder. Making an exhaust that sounds good, nonetheless, is far more of an art form. It’s a posh process involving resonators, headers, even your exhaust suggestions affect the resulting tone. That is the stuff you miss out on with low-cost eBay crap, and it’s why your exhausts have been annoying me all week.

Stop buying low-cost crap

This has been pretty car-based to date, but don’t think motorcycles are exempt. That ZX4-RR I rode the opposite day, with the exhaust drone at 4,000 RPM that felt like it might’ve cooked my brain without earplugs, is subject to this rant as well. Simply because an exhaust is louder, simply because it’s freer-flowing, does not imply it actually sounds good. It could make more power, when you tune the ECU to accommodate for the shortage of restriction, but don’t let that idiot you into pondering that low-cost can is an upgrade in every single place.

The worst offenders for affordable, bad exhausts around me appear to be VQ-engined Infinitis and F80-era 3 Series, but no make or model is secure from the onslaught of low-cost exhausts built without take care of the sound they produce. Please, I’m begging you all, put money into exhausts from firms that really take the time to think about the sound their pipes will produce. You’ll, very literally, help me sleep at night.
