One other day, one other special edition of the Volkswagen Golf GTI. Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) has just released a teaser of a brand new variant of the new hatch, featuring the distinctive Sepang International Circuit (SIC) grandstand because the background.
There aren’t any clues as to what form this automobile will take, although the above image may be very clearly of the present Mk8 model (so still no Mk8.5 facelift as yet). The one hint we will glean is from the caption, which states that “two icons are about to fulfill.”
We’ll take this to mean that it is a co-branding exercise, and the racy nature of the background signifies that the collaboration is probably going motorsport-themed. Could we see the automobile carry the branding of SIC and its sponsor Petronas, replete with highlights within the oil and gas company’s turquoise-green corporate color scheme? All pure speculation, after all.
Whatever it’s, expect the automobile to return with accessories akin to a bodykit, different wheels, window tint and special badges, as has been the case with the previous Edition 50 and Black Edition. What almost actually won’t change will probably be the mechanicals – a 245 PS/370 Nm 2.0 litre turbo four-cylinder engine and a seven-speed DSG wet dual-clutch transmission, whisking the GTI from zero to 100 km/h in 6.4 seconds.
