South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court heard how Regan Satterthwaite, 21, of Barrow, and two teenagers – who can’t be named for legal reasons – gained access to several cars parked at Alan Myerscough Ford site within the early hours of February 25 last 12 months.
Prosecutor Peter Kelly told the court the trio attempted to open door handles of multiple vehicles before successfully entering 4 – including two £52,000 Ford Wildtrak pickup trucks, a camper van and one other vehicle price around £73,000.
The North West Evening Mail reported how the court heard the group spent about an hour contained in the campervan before moving on to other vehicles.
CCTV footage captured them climbing a fence and walking onto the forecourt, where one in all the Wildtrak trucks was began and driven ‘in a stop-start motion’, repeatedly shunting into other cars and causing extensive damage.
Police later identified Satterthwaite and the 2 youths through forensic fingerprint evaluation.
In mitigation, defence solicitor Trystan Roberts said Satterthwaite had no previous convictions. “His levels of maturity weren’t crystallised at this stage, but they are actually improving,” he said.
“These were the actions of impulsive teenagers involved in substance misuse and an absence of consequential considering.”
Magistrates imposed an 18-month community order on Satterthwaite, requiring 220 hours of unpaid work and 10 days of rehabilitation activity. The 2 teenagers received six- and eight-month youth rehabilitation orders.
All three defendants were ordered to pay £666.66 each in compensation to cover the surplus from the dealership’s insurance policy.
