Proton has announced that it’s expanding the operational capability of its recent electric vehicle (EV) assembly plant in Tanjung Malim. The national automaker said the expansion plan, for which an investment of RM37 million has been allocated, comes nine months after the power began operations and follows on the strong market demand for its eMas models.
Launched last September, the RM82 million EV factory, which sits on a 5.57-acre site inside Proton’s complex in Tg Malim, has a primary phase capability of 20,000 units each year, however the planned expansion will take the power’s annual production capability to 42,000 units. Currently, the plant has a staff strength of 391 employees, however the automaker said the expansion is anticipated to generate recent employment opportunities.
The corporate said the choice to speed up the plant expansion is because of the market response for the eMas 5, which recorded 8,472 deliveries in the primary 4 months of 2026, making it the country’s best-selling EV model by a major margin. To support that demand and shorten delivery times for patrons, the eMas 5 is ready to hitch the eMas 7 on the local assembly line soon.
The automaker said that the deliveries recorded by the eMas 5, combined with the eMas 7 and eMas 7 PHEV, brought total sales of its electrified models to 11,617 units from January to April, representing a 329% increase in comparison with the identical period last 12 months.
“Customer demand has exceeded our initial projections, and this has accelerated our plans to localise production capability. Beyond increasing production volume, this investment also reflects Proton’s commitment to helping develop Malaysia’s EV ecosystem,” said Proton deputy CEO Datuk Abdul Rashid Musa.
“By expanding local assembly activities, we’re also creating opportunities for talent development, job creation, and the strengthening of the local automotive supply chain as Malaysia moves towards a more electrified future,” he added.
