The Malaysian government doesn’t plan to upgrade the FT2 Federal Highway despite the route having recorded its most congested traffic service level based on 2024 traffic data, reported Recent Straits Times.
This decision was taken because the proposal to upgrade the 34.59 km-long route between Kuala Lumpur and Port Klang isn’t any longer economically viable because of the high costs of land and asset acquisition, in addition to potential social impact if the highway upgrade project is to proceed, said works minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
“Based on 2024 traffic data, the extent of service (LOS) on the FT2 Federal Highway at Census Station BR101 was recorded at ‘LOS F’, indicating heavy traffic flow, much like FT28 of the Middle Ring Road 2 (MRR2) at Census Station BR903,” Nanta said during an issue and answer session within the Dewan Negara today, the report wrote.
Meanwhile, the works minister said in August this 12 months that the Federal Highway is ready to receive a RM20 million allocation for the upgrading of its motorcycle lanes, though there are not any plans so as to add more motorcycle lanes to other major roads.
The federal government has to conduct comprehensive studies before latest bike lanes are constructed with the intention to avoid latest conflicts on roads with quite a few entry and exit points, Nanta said on the time.
