JPJ has launched Ops Tunggak at Malaysia-Thailand border areas to detain foreign registered cars. The special operation will concentrate on border areas in Perlis, Kedah, Perak and Kelantan, and targets foreign drivers that break the foundations, including those with outstanding saman.
“JPJ will take motion against foreign vehicles especially those from Thailand. We are going to stop foreign vehicles for inspection, and if found to have outstanding saman, the driving force will likely be asked to pay up immediately before he can proceed the journey,” JPJ’s senior director of enforcement Muhammad Kifli Ma Hassan said yesterday in Kota Bharu.
“JPJ desires to be certain that not only our residents must obey the foundations, but foreigners also must follow and pay summonses which can be already issued,” he said, adding that Thai vehicles specifically are repeat offenders.
A vehicle entry permit (VEP) system, similar to the one in place for Singapore-registered vehicles, would handle this problem, nevertheless it’s not yet applicable to foreign vehicles coming from the north.
