JLR forced to supply own insurance amid security fears

Jaguar Land Rover has resorted to offering its own insurance to assist customers protect themselves from the scourge of key cloning and keyless automobile theft and criminals targeting its high value vehicles to strip for parts or resale abroad.

The carmaker earlier this 12 months said it had invested greater than £10 million in lessening the possibilities of the most recent Range Rover models being stolen through developing advanced electrical architecture that features the most recent security technology.

Recent DVLA data shows that the Range Rover was the second most stolen automobile of 2022, the Land Rover Discovery was the fifth most stolen. Yr-on-year the variety of stolen Range Rovers increased by 47% to five,533 since 2021.

JLR said the service has provided quotes to greater than 4,000 clients since October, with a median monthly premium of lower than £200, adding that it has shared its latest security data with leading insurance providers to assist increase the range of insurance options on the open market. 

Patrick McGillycuddy, JLR UK managing director, said: “Customers of luxury cars and other luxury goods are experiencing a rise in thefts because of organised criminal activity within the UK. The desirability of our luxury vehicles, coupled with concerns around thefts, has recently led to challenges in obtaining insurance cover for some clients.

“We’re fully committed to doing the whole lot we will to handle this by adopting a multifaceted approach: from our significant investment in vehicle security, to now providing our own insurance. While our latest insurance proposition is a key milestone, we would like to reassure clients that we’ll proceed monitoring and refining our service in order that much more clients can reap the benefits of it.” 

JLR said its latest vehicles are proving resilient to theft with UK police data indicating that since January 2022, only 9 of the 12,200 latest Range Rovers on the road have been stolen (0.07 per cent), while only 13 of the 13,400 latest Range Rover Sports on the road have been affected (0.1 per cent).
