Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) could have teased several special editions for this weekend’s Malaysia Autoshow, but evidently it couldn’t wait that long – so it’s decided to launch all of them today. The one which enthusiasts can be most involved in is undoubtedly the Golf GTI Black Edition which, because the name suggests, receives an entire host of darkened components.
First up, the value, which is RM246,490 nett (RM247,512 on-the-road without insurance) with the usual two-year warranty, or RM258,990 (RM260,012 OTR) with the Volkswagen Assurance Package (VAP) five-year warranty and servicing (the latter prolonged to seven years here).
That’s RM6,000 costlier than the usual Mk8 GTI; nonetheless, the corporate is offering a special RM15,000 introductory discount, bringing that figure right down to RM243,990 (RM245,012 OTR).
On the surface, the Black Edition is differentiated through the identical 18-inch “Richmond” turbine-style alloy wheels but in black, here dressed with self-righting GTI centre caps and GTI-branded valve caps. If those two accessories sound familiar to you, that’s because they were also fitted to last yr’s Edition 50, albeit on snazzier “Pretoria” rollers.
Elsewhere, you’ll find “Black” branding on the B-pillars in addition to JPJ-compliant window tint. In the event you were miffed that the Edition 50 was only offered in white or grey, you’re in luck, since the Black Edition will be had in either Kings Red or Deep Black (obviously).
Inside, the Black Edition receives specially-branded floor mats and a real Volkswagen Universal Traffic Recorder 2.0 (i.e. a splash cam) on the back and front. The camera contains a Sony Starvis night-vision image sensor that is alleged to deliver QHD videos at high speeds even in low-light conditions, together with dual-band 5 GHz WiFi connectivity for faster downloads.
The boot, meanwhile, is fitted with cargo dividers that attach to the boot floor with velcro. Buyers also receive a Black Edition box with a Volkswagen key holder and even a certificate of authenticity for the automobile.
