  • Mercedes-Benz has launched the AMG PureSpeed as the primary model in its recent Mythos series of low-volume special editions
  • The AMG PureSpeed is predicated on the SL 63 and shares that automobile’s 577-hp twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8
  • Production of the AMG PureSpeed shall be limited to 250 units worldwide

Mercedes-Benz has formally introduced its Mythos series, a brand new line of limited-edition masterpieces, debuting with a surprising speedster inspired by the AMG SL.

The automobile, capped at 250 units globally, was first previewed in May with the PureSpeed concept. Each the concept’s name and its striking design have been carried through to production.

Revealed on Saturday through the 2024 Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the PureSpeed is a real speedster, entirely devoid of a roof and windshield, identical to the SLR McLaren Stirling Moss launched greater than a decade ago. For occupant safety, designers have integrated a halo protection system akin to that utilized in Formula 1. Made out of steel as a substitute of F1’s carbon fiber, the halo protects occupants’ heads by deflecting large objects. The PureSpeed also includes dual rollover hoops positioned behind the seats.

Small wind deflectors ahead of the cabin guide airflow over the heads of the driving force and passenger, but helmets are still required for speeds beyond city limits. To enrich the automobile, AMG offers matching helmets equipped with a communications system, enabling clear conversation between occupants at high speeds. Smartphones can even pair with the system for phone calls or having fun with your favorite playlist. When the vehicle shouldn’t be in use, a cloth is designed to suit over the cabin to guard it from the weather.

The PureSpeed is built on the SL 63 model from the most recent SL lineup. It boasts that automobile’s 577-hp twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 and all-wheel-drive system. The only transmission is AMG’s 9-speed automatic, which incorporates a wet starting clutch as a substitute of a standard torque converter for weight savings and sharper response. Performance figures include a 0-62 mph sprint in 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 196 mph.

Other elements borrowed from the SL include a front-lift kit, rear-wheel steering, and carbon-ceramic brake rotors. AMG’s Energetic Ride Control suspension, which features hydraulic roll stabilization and adaptive dampers, can also be included. The wheels measure 21 inches and have carbon-fiber covers to cut back turbulence. Energetic aerodynamic features are also incorporated into the automobile, including components underneath.

The front of the automobile incorporates a more pronounced nose in comparison with the usual SL, which Mercedes said was inspired by the design of the AMG One hypercar. Also unique to the design is the paint fade which contains hand-painted AMG logos. Contained in the concept, there’s bespoke trim in addition to a custom dash-mounted clock designed by watch company IWC Schaffhausen, a partner of Mercedes. Designers also fitted a 15-speaker Burmester audio system and a middle console badge that reads “1 out of 250” to spotlight the automobile’s exclusivity.

Mercedes-Benz hasn’t announced pricing for the PureSpeed. The automaker also hasn’t said whether the automobile shall be available within the U.S.
