FinanceBuzz surveyed 1,000 American drivers to check their knowledge.

A recent survey conducted by FinanceBuzz is shining a light-weight on what American drivers find out about caring for his or her vehicles.

The team at FinanceBuzz surveyed 1,000 U.S. adults on basic automotive knowledge to search out out what they do and have no idea.

Routine Maintenance Tasks

Cars are essential to the American every day routine, and so is their maintenance. While most Americans have their favorite mechanic shops to assist with the routine upkeep, like oil and filter changes, knowing easy methods to do a few of these tasks yourself can save loads of money in the long term.

Most respondents wouldn’t have the opportunity to vary a spare tire in an emergency, with 48% of drivers saying they don’t know the way.

Oil changes, while essentially the most common of automobile maintenance tasks, are essentially the most procrastinated on. Doing it yourself could save $75-$100 per change; nonetheless, only 36% of drivers said they will perform their very own oil change.

While there is a generational divide, most people are not performing their own vehicle maintenance. - Graph: FinanceBuzz

While there’s a generational divide, most individuals aren’t performing their very own vehicle maintenance.

Changing spark plugs is the duty with the bottom confidence level in the case of doing it yourself, with 73% of respondents saying they would wish another person to do the job.

Generation Gap

As with many things, experience makes an enormous difference. Age impacts a driver’s knowledge of cars, driving, and maintenance.

The youngest generation, Gen Z, is the least knowledgeable and has the least confidence of their ability to perform an oil change.

Millennials are most confident of their abilities to perform their very own oil changes, with some adding that they would wish to look up just a few details before doing so.

Older generations, like Boomers and Gen X, have more automobile experience because they’ve been driving for longer; nonetheless, that didn’t lead to a better rate of confidence or ability to do their oil change.

Drivers Just Don’t Understand

While maintenance and maintenance are central to being a responsible automobile owner, so is knowing your automobile’s warning signs and keeping an updated automobile insurance policy.

All vehicles have safety warning lights built into the vehicle’s dashboard to alert drivers when something is required. But how effective are these lights if drivers don’t know what they mean?

Just 75% of drivers knew the check engine and oil pressure symbols, and even fewer know the difference between the tire pressure and brake indicator.

While most Americans can discover the check engine light, they can’t readily discover other dashboard warning symbols.

While 70% of drivers say they’re confident they know the way much their monthly auto insurance premium costs, they’re uncertain of their coverage limits. Only 48% are confident of their knowledge of insurance coverage limits.

Most Americans aren’t acquainted with the main points of their insurance coverage.

FinanceBuzz offers some essential reminders when picking an insurance provider:

  • Pick the precise provider. Find highly rated insurers that supply a potent mixture of coverage, pricing, and customer support.
  • Get clarity in your coverage plan. Familiarize yourself together with your coverage plan and any incentives your provider may offer for protected driving or courses; some could prevent a whole lot yearly.
  • Manage auto repairs with smart financing. Explore payment options for maintenance fees. Some shops offer their very own financing for big-ticket jobs.

Taking the time to learn and understand the warning symbols to your vehicle’s make and model and your insurance coverage promotes safety when driving and in an emergency.
