Chrysler began using the Latest Yorker name on cars in 1940, after a few years of selling Imperial-based Latest York Specials. Aside from the 1942-1945 break Chrysler took from car-building so as to manufacture things like uranium hexafluoride gaseous-diffusion hardware for the Manhattan Project and 30-cylinder flathead engines for Sherman tanks (and 1989, when the Latest Yorker Fifth Avenue became just the Fifth Avenue), Latest Yorkers rolled off assembly lines nonstop through the 1996 model 12 months. Today’s Junkyard Gem is one in all the last Latest Yorkers built, present in a automotive graveyard in Phoenix, Arizona.
The 1994-1996 Latest Yorker was built on a stretched version of the Chrysler LH platform, which was developed out of the Renault-derived Eagle Premier that got here to Chrysler when Lee Iacocca had his company buy American Motors in 1987.
This generation of Latest Yorker was essentially same automotive as the Chrysler LHS and an in depth sibling of the Dodge Intrepid, Chrysler 300M, Chrysler Concorde and Eagle Vision.
It wasn’t quite as awe-inspiring as a number of the earlier Latest Yorkers (see: 1953, 1964, 1977 but not the sub-awe-inspiring 1982 or 1990), however it was big, comfortable and fairly powerful with its 214-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine.
The MSRP for this automotive was $25,596, or about $52,396 in 2023 dollars. The nearly similar 1995 Chrysler LHS was $29,595 ($60,582 after inflation), which confused nearly everyone. Meanwhile, the distressingly (for those who were a Chrysler dealer) similar-looking 1995 Dodge Intrepid began at just $17,974 ($36,794 in today’s money). The bragging rights of owning a Latest Yorker had diminished steadily ever because the name began occurring dressed-up Dodge Diplomats, anyway.
I admired the 1940-1981 Latest Yorkers a lot, back within the pre-LH days, that my Negativland/Throbbing Gristle/Psychic TV-influenced band recorded a song about them in 1988.
The American luxury automotive is now within the fast lane.
Your Chrysler-Plymouth dealer has an enormous sale on Latest Yorkers!
