Independent garages are being urged to enroll to a brand new scheme that may help secure them access to the information they should repair the most recent vehicles.
The Independent Garage Association (IGA) is asking on businesses across the UK automotive sector to register early for the Security-related Repair and Maintenance Information (SERMI) scheme, because it is expecting a rush when it goes live later this yr.
The IGA expects SERMI to level the playing field between franchised dealers and independent garages to compete for younger vehicles, which have often been a key customer segment for those with authorised repairer status for automobile brands.
The event marks the primary time independent garages will gain secure access to critical security-related vehicle data – including key coding, ECU programming and software downloads – previously reserved for franchised dealerships and authorised repairers.
Access to diagnostics and data is especially necessary on newer vehicles, with electric vehicles specifically having fewer moving parts and are resembling something more akin to a complex computer system, somewhat than a mechanical block crammed with oil and gears.

The IGA has campaigned for fair access to manufacturer data since 2009, and now, with SERMI set to launch, the association stresses that preparation is vital.
The IGA said that companies that register early won’t only avoid delays but will even be well-placed to deliver skilled, compliant services from day one.
