The brand new-generation Hyundai Kona has hit recent sales highs within the small SUV segment, posting record months in May and June charged by strong sales of the brand new hybrid versions.

Setting an all-time monthly sales record in May (1842 units) and following up with a detailed second in June (1804 units), around 1 / 4 of all Kona sales in Australia are the hybrid versions, while the all-electric Kona is accounting for 10 per cent of sales year-to-date (YTD).

June’s result was on the upper side for the Kona Hybrid too, with 532 of the 1804 registered units coming from the HEV variant alongside 1138 petrols and 134 EVs.

It wasn’t quite enough to knock the MG ZS range off top spot (1970 units in June), however the Kona beat the GWM Haval Jolion (1305 units in June), Mazda CX-30 (1306 units in June) and Subaru Crosstrek (1294 units in June). As of June 30, the Kona is second within the small SUV sales race behind the ZS (8948 v 11,809 units).

The Kona is currently the tenth best-selling hybrid in Australia, with 2057 units registered in the primary six months of 2024. The GWM Haval Jolion HEV (2185 units) is just ahead, while the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid’s 4414 registrations stays top of the segment.

Pricing for the Kona Hybrid starts from $36,000 before on-road costs, and tops out at $46,500 plus on-roads. Hyundai is currently offering the bottom Kona Hybrid for $39,990 drive-away for vehicles ordered and delivered between 1 May and 31 July 2024.

    Kona Hybrid Premium

Power within the Hyundai Kona Hybrid comes from a 1.6-litre petrol engine teamed with an electrical motor and small lithium-ion battery pack, driving the front wheels via a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

System power and torque are listed as 104kW and 265Nm respectively, with combined fuel consumption rated at a really thrifty 3.9 litres per 100 kilometres and CO2 emissions of 89 grams per 100km.
