The Honda Prelude is making a comeback, this time as a hybrid. The revival of this iconic model was announced on the Tokyo Mobility Show in October 2023, where a striking concept was unveiled. Initially considered a pure electric vehicle, the Prelude concept revealed itself as a hybrid coupe. While the provision of the production model within the US stays uncertain, it has been confirmed that Europe will certainly see this latest Prelude on its roads.

Along with this announcement, Honda has revealed a vibrant red version of the concept automobile. This latest color gives the vehicle a sportier look in comparison with the unique white, highlighted further by the red brake calipers showcasing the Brembo branding. The subtle carbon fiber body kit, complete with a discreet rear spoiler, enhances the fresh paint job. The concept also retains the sleek black 20-inch wheels from last 12 months’s model.

Despite the joy, Honda has been reluctant to disclose the inside of the Prelude, as indicated by the blacked-out windows. Nevertheless, the presence of normal side mirrors suggests that the concept is near its production form. This means a high likelihood that the design won’t see significant changes when it finally hits the market.

Technical details remain sparse, with Honda keeping specifics under wraps. The newest press release teases the Prelude’s promise of an optimal balance between driving dynamics and fuel efficiency but stops in need of providing concrete specifications. Chief Engineer Tomoyuki Yamagami has clarified that the brand new Prelude shouldn’t be intended to be a high-performance sports automobile, tempering expectations of a track-ready vehicle.

The sixth-generation Prelude is being designed for each left- and right-hand-drive markets. Honda has confirmed it’ll be a four-seater, although the coupe’s sleek roofline suggests a 2+2 seating arrangement. There is theory that the Prelude may very well be a coupe variant of the hybrid Civic, which currently offers a combined output of 200 hp and 232 lb-ft from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine paired with two electric motors. Given the Prelude’s sporty ambitions, it might be fitting for Honda’s engineers to reinforce these figures.

Ahead of the production model’s expected release within the mid-2020s, the red Honda Prelude concept will probably be showcased on the Goodwood Festival of Speed from July 11-14. This appearance is ready to further fuel anticipation and excitement for this contemporary revival of a classic nameplate.
