General Motors has expanded its recall efforts, now encompassing roughly 820,000 newer model pickup trucks in North America because of concerns regarding tailgate safety. Initially, the recall targeted around 320,000 Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks from 2020 to 2024 because of a brief circuit tailgate switch issue. Nonetheless, the scope has broadened to incorporate a bigger variety of trucks, spanning the identical model years.

The expanded recall focuses on trucks equipped with power unlatching tailgates, as water intrusion into the outside tailgate switch can result in a brief circuit while the vehicle is parked. This issue poses a possible safety hazard because the tailgate could unlatch and open unexpectedly. There have been reports of 1 minor injury and three minor property damage complaints related to this concern.

The recall covers roughly 570,000 trucks in the US and 250,000 in Canada, making it one in all GM’s most vital recalls of the yr. Each U.S. and Canadian regulators emphasize the danger of unsecured cargo falling onto the road if the tailgate opens while the vehicle is in motion.

To handle the problem, GM dealers will replace the outside touchpad switch assemblies with parts that feature improved resistance to water intrusion. Within the interim, vehicles in dealership inventory and owners could have the part disabled until alternative parts develop into available. Moreover, GM advises owners to examine their tailgates to make sure they’re closed and latched securely before driving.

GM initiated an investigation in response to complaints of unwanted tailgate openings, receiving a complete of 136 complaints alleging such incidents. The affected trucks include 2020-2023 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra models, in addition to heavy-duty versions from 2020 to 2024.

GM reassures that it’s working swiftly to treatment the problem and enhance the security of its vehicles.
