The national average for gas prices has hit a low not seen since exiting the pandemic.
The national average stands at $2.95 per gallon, which is 8.5 cents lower than every week ago, in response to GasBuddy data compiled from greater than 12 million individual price reports covering over 150,000 gas stations across the country.
This average is down 6.9 cents from a 12 months ago and 5.4 cents lower than a 12 months ago.
“Nearly every state saw average gas prices fall heading into Thanksgiving, with the national average dipping below $3 per gallon for several consecutive days—falling to $2.95 per gallon over the weekend, the bottom level since May 2021,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum evaluation at GasBuddy. “With refinery maintenance largely complete and OPEC increasing oil production for December, oil prices have struggled. Mix those aspects, and you could have a solid recipe for continued downward pressure on gas prices within the weeks ahead. A number of dozen stations are already offering gas under $2 per gallon, and we could see that number grow as we move further into the vacation season. It couldn’t come at a greater time for Americans—with relief arriving just as the vacations kick off.”

Diesel prices are also easing, and in the most cost effective cities, averages have dipped into the low-$2 range, with a couple of stations still offering gas under $2 per gallon. Holiday-goers and Christmas travelers will find the proper Christmas gift for his or her journeys—the bottom prices on the pumps because the pandemic.
This holiday pricing decline continues a trend, as 2024 numbers were also the bottom since 2020.
“Christmas is commonly when gas prices settle near the bottom levels of the 12 months, and 2025 is not any exception,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum evaluation at GasBuddy.
The national average gas price is estimated at $2.79 on Christmas Day, in response to GasBuddy. That is 21 cents lower than last 12 months’s average.
“Refinery maintenance has wrapped up, supplies are rising, and winter demand is far lower than in summer — all of which help keep a lid on prices. Provided there are not any surprises, holiday travelers should see pump prices a bit lower than last Christmas. We’re also seeing encouraging early trends as we prepare to release our 2026 Fuel Outlook in January, with signs that lower prices could proceed into next 12 months. For those traveling across state lines, remember the acute volatility in prices that may occur between states and save yourself 20-80 cents per gallon by filling up on the cheaper side.”

The national average for gas prices has continued to say no over the past month, as predicted holiday numbers have come to fruition.
“For a fourth straight week, the national average price of gasoline has declined, as conditions remain ripe for a number of the lowest seasonal gas prices in five years,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum evaluation at GasBuddy.
The national average gas price is officially $2.79, in response to GasBuddy. That is 21 cents lower than last 12 months’s average and 26 cents lower than last month.

We’re continuing to see some gas prices below $2 per gallon within the nation’s least expensive states, now at greater than 125 gas stations. Diesel prices have also seen some relief, though inventories remain tight, keeping the national average higher than a 12 months ago.”
