The Kuala Lumpur road transport department (JPJ) has seized 58 vehicles under Ops Pemandu Warga Asing (PEWA). The operation, which targets non-Malaysians driving without licences or proper documentation, was carried out from 9am to 2pm yesterday around Wangsa Maju, Setapak and Gombak, Bernama reports.
“They were found committing various offences, including driving and not using a licence and insurance coverage. Some attempted to flee but were successfully detained for further motion. After we checked, these vehicles were still registered under the local owners. Legal motion can even be taken against them,” KL JPJ director Hamidi Adam said.
The miscreants comprised 15 Pakistanis, 13 Indians, 11 Indonesians, 10 Bangladeshis, eight Burmese and a Palestinian. Most were involved in scrap collection, while others operated small businesses. Five rubbish lorries were seized, and Hamidi issued a stern warning to contractors using foreigners as rubbish lorry drivers in violation of regulations.
All vehicles were seized under Section 64(1), while summonses were issued under Sections 23(1), 23(2) and 90(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Ops PEWA in total saw 323 vehicles inspected and 283 saman issued for various offences, and PEWA-related vehicle seizures have declined to 376 last yr from 586 in 2024.
